Genu Berlo is an American painter of Romanian heritage, operating between Bucharest and New York City. His formation is mixed: a Bachelor's in Mathematics (1997), a Bachelor's in Architecture from the University of Bucharest (2001), and continuing Fine Arts studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC (2003). Upon his arrival in New York City in 2000, for over a decade he worked as a design architect at some of New York's most prestigious firms, including the globally iconic Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). In 2012 he left that world to commit fully to painting. Since then he exhibited across Romania and beyond: shows at Gallery Studio 76, Atelier030202 and Palazzo Vimana, Galateca, Grumazescu, Contempora, Palatul Brancovenesc Mogoșoaia, Orion, EtajMahal; institutional appearances at the National Museum of Maps (Bucharest), the Nicolae Simache Clock Museum (Ploiești), the Municipal Museum Regina Maria (Iași),  Art Museum Casa Simian (Râmnicu Vâlcea), and the Inbe Art Space Museum in Yoshinogawa, Japan.

“I paint color and geometry in empiric formulas I have carried since early or became obsessed with along my journey, or that simply get my curiosity now. I mostly use oil on canvas, linen, or different materials like stone and metal that come in handy, in forms that are at once precise and wild, structured and free.

I imagine that my painting is for people who look at the world and want more than what is given, who reach, instinctively, for the deeper pattern beneath things, or layers above. And for people that can set aside the narrative mind, and allow a moment for play and contemplation.

Through painting I feel connected to the world, to myself, to something larger. And awe is not a side effect, it is the whole point.”
